My Story - Part Seven

On New Year’s Day 1999, I made a resolution: I had to find work that year because my finances dictated it. By March, I was seriously contemplating filing bankruptcy. I was heavily in debt. I had been unemployed since January 1997. Thus, it was time to seek out employment. I began my search for employment in February 1999. I couldn’t find anything that suited me in the beginning.

On March 1, 1999, I was looking through the classified ads on the Missouri Division of Employment's site, Missouri WORKS. I had put my resume up on the site to see if anyone would contact me. I got one call from a temp agency. I decided to send my resume to one of the employers who had posted a job opening. It was a life insurance company. I didn’t say anything to anyone in my family. Two weeks later, I got a call from the Human Resources department of the company that I had sent my resume to. The caller asked me to come in to take the company’s basic skills test. I went downtown and took the tests. I passed them. On Wednesday, March 24th, I received a call from one of the senior consultants in Human Resources. I scheduled an interview for the following day. I went in for my interview on Thursday, March 24th. Within an hour after the interview, I had a job offer. I started working for the company four days later.

On Tuesday, March 23, 1999, I saw Dr. Colyer for the last time (but didn’t realize it until months later. In the fall of 19999, I decided that I did not want anymore surgery. I decided that three dozen surgeries was enough and that really nothing else could be done. I was satisfied with the results. What was more important to me.. I was employed. I was suppose to return for a follow-up appointment in September 1999 but I didn’t for many reasons. The biggest reason: I am working now and don’t want to deal with surgeries anymore.

May 1999 brought a new addition to the family. Isabel, my youngest niece was born on May 12th. Because I was working, I was unable to be at the hospital the day she was born. I saw her for the first time the very next day tho.

It is now March 2000, I am still employed with the same company. I learn something new everyday at my job. I am still not in a relationship. But that does not bother me. I feel that if it is going to happen, it will. If it doesn’t, it doesn’t. I am not going to beat my head against a wall waiting for it to happen. I’ve got my family and friends. I am very close to my family, especially my four nieces whom I call "My Girls."

It is fall 2000.. Much has happened since I last updated my story. First of all, I am still working at the same company. But I am doing other things. Secondly, I have a man in my life.. YES, I HAVE A MAN IN MY LIFE!!! He is the nicest man I have ever gone out with. His name is Brian and he works at a non-profit organization. He does the same work that I used to do. He and I have so much in common that is unbelievable! We both enjoy bowling and shopping (I don't know too many men who do.)

It is now October 2001. Much has happened in the last year. I am still single.. distance and moving too fast broke up my last relationship. I am not in any hurry to rush into any new relationship. I am still working at the same place after two-and-a-half years. The events of Tuesday, September 11, 2001, have had a profound effect on me as well as everyone around me.
